What keeps a business running smoothly when its software needs a helping hand? For Paul Carty, Customer Support Specialist at the Helpdesk within ABS Laundry Business Solutions, that question sits at the heart of almost every working day. Roughly eighteen months into his time at ABS, he already thrives on untangling complex customer challenges and keeping operations moving. Here is a closer look at the journey, the role, and the person behind the support desk.

A Chance Introduction
Paul’s path to ABS began with a job advertisement that was already two years old. The role sounded interesting, and the office happened to be in his own neighbourhood, so he decided to introduce himself directly to the hiring manager. A couple of months later, he became the newest member of the team. Compared with the long tenure of many colleagues he still considers himself a relative newcomer, yet what he values most is the freedom to work through complex customer challenges without being micromanaged.
Life at the Helpdesk
Customer Support at the Helpdesk is a genuinely multidisciplinary role. Paul’s day starts at 07:30 by prioritising the day’s most important cases, then following up on those that other teams, such as the Software Maintenance Team, may be looking into further, so that customers stay informed throughout. No two days look quite the same. Handling configuration questions, writing occasional database scripts, and advising customers on how to implement new functional requests all sit alongside the steady flow of support requests that comes in throughout the day.
Drive and Expertise
A naturally competitive streak keeps Paul pushing to learn more and to be among the strongest performers in the department. His academic background supports that ambition. Graduating in 2011 with a BSc (Hons) in IT Management for Business gave him both the theoretical grounding and the practical tools to oversee complex, interdepartmental matters at once, helping customers reach lasting solutions as quickly as possible.
The Gateway Between Customers and Teams
The Helpdesk often acts as the gateway between customers and the wider organisation. Paul is in daily contact with colleagues across every department, and when a request falls outside the scope of the Helpdesk, he makes sure the right team takes it on. From there he frequently helps coordinate efforts across departments while keeping the customer updated at each step, so that everything is followed through to a clear resolution.
A Culture Without Ego
The informal and flexible culture at ABS is something Paul appreciates. Everyone is on a first name basis, and in principle there is little room for ego. That openness makes it easier to ask questions, share knowledge, and focus on the work rather than the hierarchy.
Tools That Support Better Service
New internal tools and processes are steadily being introduced to handle more complex customer requests. An expanding databank, the growing use of AI agents, and more robust handover procedures for requests that move beyond the Helpdesk all help the team respond more effectively and keep the quality of support consistent.
Where the Helpdesk Is Headed
Customers are integrating new technologies into their operations at a growing pace, and Paul sees the Helpdesk continuing to evolve as a multidisciplinary department to provide timely, effective support. The willingness of colleagues to share specialist knowledge will be central to that. The main challenge, as he sees it, is expanding the collective skillset of the Helpdesk to keep pace with increasingly advanced technologies and integrations, without letting that expertise become too thinly spread.
Keeping Customers Moving
Software occasionally needs attention, whether that involves the ABSSolute application, data transfers, scanners, or mobile apps, and a responsive Helpdesk is what keeps those moments from affecting a customer’s daily operations. By staying proactive and resolving requests quickly, Paul helps customers keep working with confidence, reinforcing the wider mission of ABS Laundry Business Solutions to deliver dependable software for the essential industries that rely on it.
